The Canaries in the Atlantic Ocean

The Canary Islands are without doubt one of the most beautiful and attractive regions Europe can offer. They are situated in the Atlantic Ocean only 115 kilometres from the African coast, and consist of an archipelago with: seven islands.Tenerife , La Palma, Gran Canaria, La Gomera, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and El Hierro and "the 6 rocks".

The total population is estimated to be approximately 1,6 million. The majority, however, live in the two capitals of the principal islands: Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

Tenerife, the island of eternal spring

Tenerife is the largest island of the Canaries; its population is estimated to be around 700.000. The capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, together with La Laguna, the university city, are the largest and most cosmopolitan.

The island is divided up into 31 so called "municipios". Puerto de la Cruz, in the north of the island and Playa de las Americas in the south, are the largest tourist centres.

Tenerife, together with the other islands has its fame from its " Eternal Spring" a consistently temperate climate. Oscillating between 20º in the Winter and 25º in the summer.

Due to the extreme altitude differences on this volcanic island, there is a very wide range of temperature in the various zones.
